Home Window Tinting on the Sunshine Coast: Tint That Keeps the Heat Out

Home window tinting on the Sunshine Coast takes the heat, glare and UV out of your house without replacing a single window. The tint goes straight onto the glass you already have, and a typical home is done in one visit.

Thom Caruth tinting the windows of a home on the Sunshine Coast

I’m Thom Caruth. I have over 20 years experience in window tinting, and I measure, quote and fit every Glaze job myself. No subcontractors and no sales reps. Glaze is an owner-operated window tinting service based in Nirimba on the Sunshine Coast, and I work exclusively on flat glass: homes, offices and shopfronts. This page is about homes.

Why tint your home’s windows?

Windows are usually where most of the heat gets into a house. On the Sunshine Coast, west-facing rooms can feel like an oven by mid-afternoon, and the air conditioner never quite catches up. Tinted glass stops a good share of that heat, and most of the UV, before it gets inside, so the room stays cooler.

  • Cooler rooms. Up to 80% of the sun’s heat is rejected before it gets in, which you notice straight away in a Queensland summer.
  • Lower power bills. A cooler house means the air-con runs less, and that shows up on the electricity bill.
  • Less fading. Tinted glass blocks up to 99% of UV, the main cause of fading on floors, carpets, lounges and artwork.
  • Less glare. No more squinting at the TV or a laptop near a sunny window.
  • More privacy. Some shades let you see out while people can’t see in during the day.
  • Safer glass. Thicker safety and security films hold broken glass together if a window cracks.

Choosing a tint shade that keeps your view

A lot of people put off house window tinting because they think tinted glass will make the rooms dark. It doesn’t have to. Shades now range from almost clear to quite dark, and many cut heat without darkening the room much at all.

Shade is measured as visible light transmission, or VLT, which is the share of daylight that gets through. A 20% tint lets in 20% of the light, so it’s darker than a 35% tint. A lighter shade is usually the better pick for living areas. Darker window tints are for west-facing glass that cops the full afternoon sunlight.

I bring samples to your place so you can see each one on your own windows before you choose.

A lot of homes end up with a mix, usually heat-control tint on the sunny side and frosted or privacy film on bathrooms, sliding doors and street-facing glass.

Residential window tinting for privacy

Newer Sunshine Coast estates around Caloundra West, Nirimba and Kawana have houses built close together, so windows look straight into the neighbours’ place or onto the street. Residential window tinting sorts that out, so you’re not stuck with the blinds and curtains shut all day.

Reflective and one-way tints give you daytime privacy. You can see out, but people outside see a soft mirror. At night this flips once your lights are on, so for bathrooms, bedrooms and front doors that need privacy around the clock, frosted film is the better answer. For daytime privacy that keeps your view, see privacy window film.

How much does home window tinting cost on the Sunshine Coast?

For most Sunshine Coast homes, my price works out to roughly $60 to $80 per square metre fitted, depending on the film and the brand. A typical home lands somewhere between $500 and $1,500 all up.

The final price comes down to the film you choose, how many windows you’re doing, and how easy they are to reach. A few big living-room windows cost less per square metre than lots of small, awkward ones. If old tint needs removal first, that goes on the quote too.

I’d rather not guess, so I come out, measure up and give you a fixed price in writing. Film and labour are included, and the price doesn’t change on the day.

What are the downsides of tinting a home?

Tint isn’t perfect, and it’s worth knowing the limits before you book.

  • Reflective tint only gives privacy while it’s brighter outside than inside, so it reverses after dark.
  • Darker shades cut more light. If you love a bright room, go lighter. You still block the UV and a good share of the heat.
  • Not every pane suits every film, double glazing in particular, so I check your glass type first.
  • Cheap dyed tint can bubble, peel or turn purple within a few years. That’s why I only fit professional-grade film.

Every pane gets a proper clean first, because prep is what matters most. Then I cut each piece to size and squeegee it on. Expect a bit of haze while the film dries. It clears on its own.

Window tint warranty

The films I fit come with a manufacturer-backed lifetime warranty, and you get the details in writing.

Window film brands I fit

I fit professional flat-glass film from 3M, SunTek, UltraGard, LLumar, Madico, Solar Gard and ASWF, and choose the brand to suit your glass, the way each window faces, and your budget. Every film I fit carries a manufacturer-backed lifetime warranty. For heat, and the Sunshine Coast has plenty of it, ceramic tint is my go-to.

Why choose Glaze for home tinting

You deal with me from the first phone call to the last squeegee. I’m fully insured and police cleared, and I’ll tell you straight what suits each window, including when a cheaper option will do the job. Glaze is five-star rated on Google, so read the reviews and judge for yourself. You can also find out more about Glaze and how I work, or read my honest take on whether window tinting is worth it.

Home window tinting across the Sunshine Coast

I’m based in Nirimba, QLD, and tint homes in these Sunshine Coast suburbs: Birtinya, Bli Bli, Buderim, Caloundra, Caloundra West, Kawana, Landsborough, Maroochydore, Mooloolaba, Nambour, Nirimba, Noosaville and Sippy Downs.

Beachfront units in Mooloolaba and Maroochydore cop hard glare off the water, so glare control matters as much as heat there. If you’ve typed ‘window tinting near me’ in any of those suburbs, you’re in my area, and the quote is free.

Got glass at work that needs doing too? I also do office tinting, shops and schools.

Frequently asked questions about home window tinting

Is home window tinting worth it?

In most cases, yes. It cuts heat, glare and UV on the glass you already have, costs far less than replacing windows, and keeps working every summer.

Does window tinting reduce heat in a house?

Yes. Heat-control film rejects up to 80% of the sun’s heat before it gets into the room, so the air-con isn’t fighting the sun all afternoon through a Sunshine Coast summer. For help in winter as well, ask about energy-efficient window film.

Will tinting stop my floors and carpets fading?

It slows fading right down by blocking up to 99% of UV rays, the main cause of faded timber floors, rugs and lounges. Light and heat play a part too, so nothing stops fading completely. There’s more on the UV window film page.

Can you see through tinted windows at night?

With reflective tint, yes, once your lights are on. It only gives privacy during the day. Where you need privacy at night as well, frosted film is the answer.

How much does it cost to tint a house?

Roughly $60 to $80 per square metre fitted. Most homes come in between $500 and $1,500, depending on the number and size of windows and the film you pick.

How long does it take to tint a house?

Usually one visit of four to six hours. The film can look hazy while it dries, which normally takes a few days but can run longer in cool weather or with thicker film.

How long does window tinting last, and is there a warranty?

Professional-grade film lasts many years, and most film goes on the inside of the glass, out of the weather. Every film I fit carries a manufacturer-backed lifetime warranty, with the details in writing. What it covers varies by brand, so ask before you choose.

What type of window tint is best for a home?

For most living areas, ceramic. It blocks a lot of heat and stays light enough to keep rooms bright. Bathrooms and street-facing rooms usually suit frosted or privacy film.

What’s the difference between ceramic and dyed tint?

Dyed is the budget option. It cuts glare but does little for heat, and it can fade or turn purple. Ceramic uses tiny ceramic particles (some brands call it nano-ceramic) to block far more heat, holds its colour, and doesn’t affect phone or Wi-Fi signal.

Can you tint double-glazed windows?

Sometimes. Some films trap heat between the panes, which can crack the glass or void its warranty. I check what you’ve got before recommending anything.

Can you remove old tint?

Yes. I can strip old tint that has bubbled, peeled or turned purple, clean the glue off the glass, then fit new film. Mention it when you book so it’s on the quote.

What should a written window tinting quote include?

The film brand and product name, the windows being done, the price and the warranty. If a quote just says ‘tint’ and a number, ask which film it is.
