Window Frosting on the Sunshine Coast: Privacy That Still Lets the Light In

Frosted film gives plain glass the look of etched glass. People can't see in, day or night, and the daylight still comes through. It goes straight onto the glass you already have, and most homes are done in a single visit.

I’m Thom Caruth. I have over 20 years experience in window tinting, and I measure, quote and fit every job myself. Glaze is an owner-operated window tinting service based in Nirimba, Sunshine Coast QLD, working on flat glass only: homes, offices, shops, clinics and schools.

What window frosting is, and where it works

Frosted film is a translucent layer fitted to the inside of your existing glass. It scatters the light, so the room stays bright but nobody can make out what’s on the other side. From the street it looks like etched or sandblasted glass, and unlike sandblasting it can come off again later.

Choose it when you need privacy around the clock. Reflective and one-way films stop working at night once your lights are on. Frosted film looks the same at 2pm and 10pm. If you mostly want daytime privacy and to keep your view, look at privacy film instead.

Bathrooms and ensuites

Bathrooms are the obvious place to start in Sunshine Coast homes. No blinds sitting in the steam collecting mould, and the room keeps its natural light.

Front doors, sidelights and sliding doors

A frosted entry panel, or a band with clear glass above it, stops people seeing straight down the hallway. Same goes for sliding doors facing the neighbour’s house.

Office partitions and meeting rooms

Film on glass partitions gives each room privacy while keeping the light. I can cover the whole panel, run a band at seated eye level, or cut the film around your logo, and I can fit partitions early or late to suit you. For heat and glare on the outside glass, see office tinting.

Shopfronts, clinics and schools

Shops use bands and graphics to screen the back room and change rooms. Clinics do treatment rooms and reception for patient privacy, and schools do admin and counselling rooms (more on the schools page).

Types of frosted film

  • Full frost. Even coverage over the whole pane. The usual pick for bathroom privacy and partitions.
  • Bands and borders. A strip at eye level, or a border with a clear centre, so you keep some view.
  • Patterns. Lines, stripes, reeded and textured designs.
  • Logos and graphics. Your logo or lettering cut into the film, made to suit office doors and shopfronts.
  • Privacy plus heat control. Films that add some heat rejection. If heat is the bigger problem, solar film is the better fit.

I install film from 3M (the Fasara range), LLumar, SunTek and UltraGard. The film blocks up to 99% of UV, which helps stop floors and furniture fading, and it comes with a manufacturer-backed warranty, lifetime on most films.

Film or new glass?

The other ways to get the look are sandblasting your glass, or having glaziers replace it with new obscure glass.

How much does window frosting cost?

I price by the square metre, fitted. As a guide, window frosting comes in between $60 and $120 per square metre, for homes and businesses. What moves the price:

  • How much glass. A few big panels cost less per square metre than lots of small ones.
  • The film. Plain frosting, patterns and cut logos are all priced differently.
  • Access and old film. High glass takes more setting up, and old film has to come off first.

I come out, measure up and give you a fixed price in writing. Film and labour are included, and the price doesn’t change on the day.

How the job works

  1. Get in touch. Call me or send a quote request.
  2. Free measure at your place. I measure every pane, check the glass type and show you samples on your own glass.
  3. A fixed price in writing. You get it before any work starts, with the film and brand named.
  4. Fitting day. Every pane gets a proper clean first, because dust under the film shows. Most homes take 2 to 4 hours, and I finish with a final inspection.
  5. Care and warranties. You get care instructions and the warranty paperwork on the day. I’ll tell you how long to leave the film before the first clean. After that it’s a soft cloth and mild soapy water, no scourers.

Common questions

Can people see through frosted film at night?

No. It looks the same day and night, so you keep your privacy with the lights on. Someone close to the glass with a bright light behind them can show as a soft shape, but no detail.

Does frosted film make the room darker?

Not much. It spreads the light rather than blocking it, so most rooms still feel bright. The light just comes through softer.

Can frosted film go on double-glazed windows?

Usually, yes. With double glazing the worry is film that soaks up heat, which can stress the glass or the seals. Most white frosts absorb very little heat, but I check the glass, which way it faces and the film maker’s glass chart before I fit anything.

Can frosted film be removed later?

Yes. The film and the glue can be taken off, so you can change the look later. Sandblasting is permanent.

Can you cut my logo or a design into the film?

Yes. Logos, lettering, stripes and patterns can all be cut into the film. I agree the design and layout with you before anything is cut.

How long does frosted window film last?

Fitted inside, quality film holds up for many years, and most of the films I use carry a lifetime manufacturer warranty. Cheap hardware-store film often bubbles, peels or goes yellow.
